We have examined the lives of the rich man and Lazarus like a single story. The whole lives of the two men have unfolded before us just as they were. We cannot know what the family background of this rich man was, but while he lived in this world he lived as a rich man. He lived luxuriously and lived well without the slightest discomfort until the day he died. On the other hand, the poor man named Lazarus, though we cannot know how his family had collapsed so completely, lived unhappily his whole life. He lived sitting in front of the rich man’s gate begging, trying to fill his stomach with the food that fell from the rich man’s table. While they were in this world, the two men lived in circumstances as different as this.
